Presidential election 2021: Demonstrations in Uganda after the brief arrest of Bobi Wine, opposition politician and promising candidate in the upcoming election in Uganda in mid-January 2021.

A new president will be elected in Uganda on January 14, 2021. The president of the East African state, Yoweri Museveni, who has been in office since 1986, has run for re-election and Bobi Wine is currently the most promising challenger. But Wine was arrested during an election campaign for allegedly violating Corona requirements. The opposition supporters took this as an opportunity to demonstrate nationwide and of course with a focus on the capital Kampala. There were also isolated clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Bobi Wine has now been released on bail, but demonstrations are still taking place in various parts of the country. The police and the military are very present in cities across the country. Officials speak of around 400 arrests and around 30 dead since the protests began.

Ultimately, it remains to be hoped that the situation will normalize significantly again and, above all, that there will be a presidential election as peaceful as possible in mid-January 2021.
